Mark Schmink, third from left, look on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Rite Aid store at the Whistlestop Mall in Rockport. Miles and Torrisi were praised for their work in protecting seniors from telephone scammers who promise to send large cash prizes if the victim -- typically an elderly person -- sends gift cards to cover insurance, taxes and other supposed expenses. "We have been called on several occasions" by Miles and Torrisi, said Chief Mulligan. "They have reported customers attempting to purchase gift cards for large amounts of money. They have also spoken with the customer, usually a senior citizen, and informed them that they were possibly being scammed. In turn the customer has avoided losing several hundred dollars."
