Eighth-graders Isabella Guyotte, left, and Julia Harrison work together on a work of kinetic art Tuesday at O'Maley Innovation Middle School in Gloucester. The entire 8th grade class -- nearly 200 students, along with some of their parents -- had gone that morning on a field trip, funded partly by Applied Materials, to view an exhibit of the famed "Strandbeest" kinetic sculptures by Dutch artist Theo Jansen. When they returned to the school, the students designed and made their own holiday-themed "automata" using wooden dowels and discs as mechanical devices such as cams, shafts, followers and cranks. The end result: a fusion of art and machine.
