Rob Bibelhauser/Cape Ann Museum. This red coat, on display at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, dates from the war of 1812 and is the only surviving example in the United States of a British enlisted man's uniform from this period. Only six or seven more exist in Europe. An enlisted man in the 104th New Brunswick Regiment of the Army of the British Empire was slated to receive this coat, but it never arrived. It was probably part of a shipment bound for Quebec City on British transport ship which was captured by a Salem privateer. The seized coats were sold to the U.S. Army, which issued them to musician. This coat eventually came into the possession of the Somes family of Gloucester. It was donated to the museum in 1946.
