Amiah Gabriele, 6, enjoys a hamburger during a kickoff party Wednesday for The Open Door's 2014 summer meals program at Riverdale Park in Gloucester. The program, now in its 14th year, serves 150-200 children at Riverdale Park and 10 other locations in Gloucester and one in Rockport. Summer is a time of increased food insecurity for children, according to Julie LaFontaine, executive director of The Open Door. "During the school year," she said, "44 percent of Gloucester's school children are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, so when school closes for the summer there are 10 weeks when families are really struggling to make up for those lost meals. That's where The Open Door steps in."
