Third grader Sadie Mello is dressed for Colonial Day festivities Wednesday at Essex Elementary School. The event, held annually on the day before Thanksgiving, marked the end of a six-week study unit in which the school's third graders learned about life in colonial America. Students dressed up in colonial clothing, made traditional "johnnycake" corn pancakes, made fresh butter, wrote with quill pens, played with old-fashioned toys and made holiday crafts to take home.
