Wyatt Takayesu reacts after tasting a Johnnycake, a traditional corn pancake, Wednesday during Colonial Day festivities at Essex Elementary School. The event, held annually on the day before Thanksgiving, marked the end of a six-week study unit in which the school's third graders learned about life in colonial America. Students dressed up in colonial clothing, made traditional Wampanoag crafts, made fresh butter, wrote with quill pens, played with old-fashioned toys and made holiday crafts to take home.
