Third grader Riley Huber makes a Wampanoag corn husk doll Wednesday during Colonial Day festivities at Essex Elementary School. The event, held annually on the day before Thanksgiving, marked the end of a six-week study unit in which the school's third graders learned about life in colonial America. Students dressed up in colonial clothing, made traditional "johnnycake" corn pancakes, made fresh butter, wrote with quill pens, played with old-fashioned toys and made holiday crafts to take home.
