Great Pumpkin
MIKE SPRINGER/Staff photo
Peter DeNigris of Gloucester leans against one of a pair of pumpkins, weighing a little over 1,000 pounds each, that he has grown for entry in this year's Topsfield Fair. Although a 1,000-pound pumpkin would have set a world record back in the mid 1990s, DeNigris said it's about half the size needed to be a contender in this year's fair. The world record is held by a European grower, whose pumpkin weighed over 2,323 pounds. Despite his low expectations, DeNigris will enter his largest pumpkin at the fair anyway, as he has every year for the past two decades.
