Gloucester Gig Rowers
MIKE SPRINGER/Staff photo
Bill Whiting leads a group of Gloucester Gig Rowers on a daily recreation row on a 32-foot Cornish pilot gig in Gloucester Harbor. The Cornish gig was originally developed in the early 1800s on the Scilly Isles, off the coast of Cornwall, England, for use transporting a local pilot to incoming sailing vessels. The Gloucester Gig Rowers use the boat and others for various activities ranging from gentle, recreational rows to more rigorous conditioning rows and competitive racing with other New England clubs. The group is actively seeking new members of all experience levels. For more information, go to http://www.gloucestergigrowers.com.
