Don Goldenbaum, grandfather of Ruby McElhenny, a student in the Pre-Kindergarden/Kindergarten at Eastern Point Day School, was visiting the school on Thursday morning to talk about being a musician. He is a longtime violinist who performs semi-professionally with three different orchestraa, and is concertmaster at one of them in his hometown of Kansas City. He talked about the kinds of sounds violins can make - happy, sad, fast, slow, high and low. He improvised pieces based on notes that the children asked him to play, and performed such songs as "The itsy-bitsy spider," while they sang along. He also took requests, including playing the theme to "Star Wars," and the theme of its character Darth Vader. He also played "You are my Sunshine," as Ruby sang, and with the whole class, "The Instrument Song," while the class performed on imaginery instruments and marched around the room.
